Crimp and Cleave Fiber Splice
AURORA OPTICS, INC.'s crimp-and-cleave mechanical splice is ideal for applications in the field. It is fast and simple, uses only hand tools for assembly, and requires no electrical power. In addition, no chemical usage is required by the user, except for cleaning the fibers. Prefilled index oil eliminates reflections due to gap delamination, which can normally be expected in epoxied splices. Most important, the splice captures Kevlar or fiberglass strength members in the same miniature housing, providing strength restoration to complete single-fiber cable.

Requirements in the Field
The splice consists of a housing, an internal alignment element, fiber retaining cups, and crimp sleeves. The overall size is determined by the housing, which is nominally 0.148 inches in diameter by 3.250 inches long.
Key to the design and performance success of the crimp-and-cleave splice with 125 and 140 micron fiber is the 4-rod fiber alignment guide. Aurora Optics’ design team conducted some of the original research in pioneering the 4-rod guide and has extensive experience in successfully applying this state-of-the-art technique.
Aurora Optics has evolved procedural steps for this unique splice to make it compatible with many applications, and we offer applications assistance for your specific requirements. Fiber sizes range from 75 to 512 microns.
